50 Air India joins Star Alliance : World’s largest global airline alliance includes India into its family

Seven years since obtaining an ‘Applicant’ status, on 11 th July, Air India, India’s Flag Carrier, was finally inducted into the Star Alliance, the world’s largest partnership of airlines. Though the move is seen as a welcome boost for Air India, the airline is not out of the woods yet, laboring, as it is, under debts and having to rely on Government bailouts. Though the move is seen as a welcome boost for Air India, the airline is not out of the woods yet, laboring, as it is, under debts and having to rely on Government bailouts. Star Alliance formed in 1997, includes international carriers such as Lufthansa, Air Canada, Singapore Airlines and United among its current strength of 27 Members. Sources said that Air India will add nearly 400 daily flights and 35 new destinations in India to the Star Alliance network while its passengers will have more choice on routes connecting Europe, Northern America and Asia. As the only airline from India to join this global elite league, Air India’s entry into the Star Alliance will facilitate its access to a vast global network, offering unmatched reach and connectivity. This is indeed, a historic step for Air India in terms of global visibility, branding and credibility. As a Star Alliance member. Air India can offer p a s s e n ge rs s e a m l e s s travel experience across the Alliance network spanning 1,316 destinations and 18,500 departures per day around the world. Amongst the august gatherings, 23 members from the Star Alliance family participated. Ashok Lavasa, Secretary, Civil Aviation said “This is great leap for Air India and a proud moment for a v i a t i o n i n I n d i a ”. Pankaj Srivastava, Commercial Director of Air India proposed the vote of thanks .
