With onebillion tourists traveling the world ina single year in 2012, transformingthese one billion tourists into onebillion opportunities is at the heart ofthe online campaign launched byUNWTO to celebrate this historicmilestone.

Recalling the power of travel andtourism in driving economic growthand sustainable development, the’One Billion Tourists: One BillionOpportunities’ campaign calls on onebillion tourists to make their actionscount.“Imagine the difference one touristcould make by adopting smallchanges, from using their towels formore than one day, to hiring a localguide or buying local products. Nowimagine if these simple actions weremultiplied by one billion; that is thepower of one billion tourists,” saidUNWTO Secretary-General, TalebRifai, launching the campaign at theWorld Travel Market (WTM) inLondon.“Every single person who hastraveled in 2012, whether on holidayor business, is part of the one billionand can make a real difference,”continued Mr. Rifai. “I hopeeveryone will join our campaign andhelp us spread the message that onebillion tourists really do mean onebillion opportunities for economicgrowth, job creation and the future ofour planet.

”The campaign will culminate on 13Dec when the most popular tip willbe revealed and sent out to millionsvia social media. The date, 13December, has been chosen as thesymbolic arrival day of the one-billionth tourist. The arrival of theone-billionth tourist will be cele-brated byUNWTO.UNWTO is encouraging all coun-tries and the entire tourism sector tospread the word about the campaignby becoming official campaignpartners and hosting their owncelebrations on 13 Dec, raisingawareness of the important contribu-tion of one billion tourists.
