Reasons For Preferring A Travel Agent

Dear Editor,

Sub : ‘Testing Times’ – “Earn MORE on KF tickets”

I was Surprised and also Amazed to read an email sent by Kingfisher Airlines (IT) on 3rd April, 2012 with the subject “Earn MORE on KF tickets”. While they were in ‘Good Times’, IT r e d u c e d T r a v e l A g e n t s Commission from 5% to 0%. There were stiff resistance from Agents. The Travel Agents could have easily got 9% on Basic & YQ but at the instance of 9W, an Urgent Meeting was called and that too on a Sunday and in collusion with TAAI and TAFI the commission was reinstated at 3 %. Now that, IT themselves are saying that they are In Testing Times. I would like to comment on the same:- In their Testing Times – this Airline is requesting the Agents for their support. We Agents have always been Supporting all Airlines, but in return have never ever got any Support from their end. In their Testing Times – they are ready to Increase Commission from 3% to 6% on Basic + YQ as against the reduction in commission in their Good Times.

Again in their Testing Times – They have also clubbed YQ in the fare. This we have been requesting Airlines to do so as YQ can’t be a part of Tax as they are not paying the same to Authorities or Govt. It’s their Income, In their Testing Times – they expect us to forgive and forget what they did to us. Now it is the right time for us to hit the Airlines as the Iron is Hot!!! For which I request All Travel Agents of India to Support IAAI as this is the only Trade Association which is by the Agents and for the Agents. I want the Airlines to answer only one thing …….. If they ask for our support in their difficult times, we will have to ask them where they were when we needed them? Did they ever think about the agents when they were waving flags introducing 0% commission. The three Indian Carriers including IT gone ahead with their proposal for introducing Weekly Payment System effective from 1st June 2012. Associations were trying to prevail upon them. Our Association, IAAI made special appeal to the Management of IT to drop the proposal of introducing WPS.
ALAS !!!. GOOD SENSE NEVER FELL ON THEM. LET US MAKE A WILD THINKING. LET THAT BE VERY CLEAR, THIS OR ANY OTHER AIRLINES WORK AND RUN ONLY BECAUSE OF THE SUPPORT FROM AGENTS. THE DAY THIS GOES RIGHT INTO THE FAT HEAD OF ALL THE ARILINES, IT WILL BE SUNNY SKIES AND RAINBOWS FOR ALL.

1. Phone call away:- Your Travel Agent is always a phone call away to solve a problem on the spot.

2. Consultation:- You discuss your plan/idea/itinerary with a travel agent ,who can answer your query one to one, and to your satisfaction.

3. Human Touch :- Human touch can care for your sentiments/ emotions/problems/emergency in case of need.

4.Comparable Tariffs:- At times, available tariff is cheaper.

5. Avoid Deception:- On internet based bookings, availability of connecting flight is more often deceptive because of different departure terminals etc. This results in missed connection, loss of money, time and energy.

6. Safer for card payment:- Even if you pay by debit /credit card, you don’t experience the otherwise usual problems- double debits, delayed refunds, hefty cancellation charges ,hidden charges, jumping fares etc.

7. Experience:- Experience of the travel agent has its value- for comfortable and better options, for better connectivity, for different baggage rules and overall, for feedback on airlines/operations.

8. Relations:- Relations pay everywhere- even with the travel agent, for genuine guidance and support, where needed.

9. Commitment:- The commitment of an individual (Travel Agent) makes him answerable but in case of internet based companies ,their commitments are, at time, camouflaged by fine print to shield them, when needed.

10. Satisfaction:- The Amount of satisfaction derived out of travel agents’ tips and support in various fields like visa, passport, international tickets and their routings, can not be ruled out.

11. Services:- One can be time-rich and price-sensitive but can’t be master of all. A good travel agent is expert at his business and has better focus in various fields, and can go an extra mile for you.

12.Confirmation:- According to a survey, in an advanced country like United States of America, 65% of the total bookings are still made through travel agents !! They say,”good wine needs no bush”.
